We’re entering the merry month of May and May Day – May 1 – has many different meanings and connotations. This is the pagan festival Beltane celebrating the end of spring and the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere.
May Day and Jack in the Green festivals have always taken place on the first long weekend in May here in the UK. Dancing round the maypole or painting yourself green are activities which still take place in this fertile and abundant season.
May’s Astrology
Warrior Mars remains fierce in fire sign Aries up until May 18. Yet, there’s a gentler vibe flowing in when Mars moves into earth sign Taurus on May 18 and Venus moves into water sign Cancer on May 19.
This highlights nurture, love, gratitude, connecting, simple pleasures and appreciation of all that’s good and caring in the world.
And, after a couple of months with no retrograde planets, power planet Pluto is the first planet to station retrograde and start to move backwards through the zodiac.
This takes place on May 6 and could be challenging or deeply transformative if you have planets around 5° Aquarius.
Taurus Season
Taurus season continues up until May 21 when financial and emotional stability are core values.
Plus, the Sun in Taurus teams up with Jupiter in Cancer on May 11 and talk planet Mercury teams up with Jupiter in Cancer on May 13.
Wherever Taurus and Cancer fall in your horoscope, this is where life is lively and you could get lucky. Both are stand-out dates and this is when luck and good fortune could find you.
Even better, don’t wait for luck to come your way but actively engage with life and attract opportunity into your life.
Gemini Season
Communication planet Mercury is at home in flexible air sign Gemini. The talk planet returns to its sign of rulership on May 17 leading the way into Gemini season which starts officially on May 21 when the Sun enters Gemini.
Gemini season is different this time around because innovative, wild-card Uranus is also in Gemini, where it will remain for the next seven years.
And, as Mercury and Uranus are higher and lower octaves of the same aspect, it’s a double whammy of communication abilities, techniques and whizzy Gemini energy.
Uranus is active in Gemini on May 18 when it teams up with quick-thinking Mercury and on May 22 when it teams up with the brilliance of the Sun.
These combinations conjure up the symbol of the Magician, a genius and crazy influence. Your mind and technology are going to be moving at super-rapid speed.
Full Moon, New Moon, Blue Moon
There are two Full Moons taking place this month which is unusual. The second of two Full Moons in one calendar month is known as a Blue Moon and, this month, we experience a Blue Moon on May 31.
It won’t actually look blue in the night sky. Yet, a Blue Moon conjures up romance and beauty and has always inspired artists and songwriters.
The Full Moon on May 1 falls in magical, spooky Scorpio and the Blue Moon on May 31 falls in expansive, truth-telling Sagittarius.
Full Moons are a time for celebration, to practise ritual and tap into the other-worldly, intuitive aspect of the ruler of the night sky. The Moon represents your needs, the subconscious, your inner knowingness. This is why you’re wise to trust your intuition during a Full Moon phase.
Also, on May 16, there’s a fertile and abundant New Moon in Taurus, a symbol of new beginnings and an ideal time to set your intentions.
This New Moon falls a couple of days after the cazimi conjunction of the Sun & Mercury on May 14, a time for insight and influential conversations.
