July’s Astrology
The Sun remains in caring Cancer, the star sign linked to the home and family until July 22. Happy birthday to all you Cancer crabs born in July.
Then, the Sun moves into fire sign Leo on July 22 and the Sun in Leo is playful, vibrant and colourful. If you’re a typical Leo, you love to celebrate so make plans for your birthday party.
You don’t need to wait until later in the month to choose to enjoy life in July. This is because talk planet Mercury is in Leo from July 2 to July 25 and the planet of relating Venus enters Leo on July 11 where it remains until the end of the month. Therefore, July is an ideal time to have fun and dance the month away.
Action planet Mars is playing catch up and enters air sign Gemini on July 20. Before it changes star sign, however, Mars aligns with unpredictable Uranus in Taurus on July 15. This combination can be volatile and it’s wise not to take any undue risks as accidents can happen.
There’s one more proviso this month to take note of. This is that communication planet Mercury moves into earth sign Virgo on July 25, the star sign linked to work, study and organisation.
Not only that but Mercury is getting ready for its next retrograde phase which will take place from August 5 to August 28. Mercury turns retrograde in Virgo and will move back into Leo, so there may be some to-ing and fro-ing going on.
Your Mercury retrograde preparation list
- Back up important files and deal with any technology gremlins
- Sort out any transport issues and get car problems checked out
- Have those all-important conversations
- Plan a slower pace of life next month – book a retreat or some time out
- Make any big decisions or major investments before August 5
Mercury retrograde means that August would be an ideal month to go on retreat and take your foot off the accelerator.
‘Slow down’ is Mercury retrograde’s mantra. July looks lively, in a good way, but get ready to kick into a slower pace next month, so you don’t get caught out.

New Moon Cancer – July 5
A New Moon is a symbol of new beginnings. Traditionally, a New Moon is the time to launch a project, begin something new and start over.
This is the beginning of the waxing phase of the Moon cycle, an ideal time to set your intentions for the month ahead. Make a wish when you first catch sight of the crescent Moon, a couple of days after the New Moon date.
This month’s New Moon falls in water sign Cancer, an emotional and sensitive star sign. This is a lovely New Moon for family get-togethers and attracting more comfort and security into your life.
Full Moon Capricorn – July 21
During the Full Moon, the light of the moon is at its peak, shining a light on your current situation. Traditionally, a Full Moon is the time to trust your intuition, make important decisions and bring matters to completion or culmination.
This is the start of the waning phase of the Moon cycle, an ideal time to release and let go of what’s no longer needed in your life.
This Full Moon falls in earth sign Capricorn, the same as last month. June’s Full Moon on June 22 fell at 1° Capricorn and July’s Full Moon on July 21 falls at 29° Capricorn, at the end of the star sign.
Full Moons represent endings and this may be especially true during July’s Full Moon. This is because the Moon sits close to Pluto, the planet of endings, loss and transformation. Consider what you’re ready to let go of, close the door on or get serious about.
