ARIES SOLAR ECLIPSE
SOLAR ECLIPSE [29 Aries 50]
London – April 20, 2023 (04:12 GMT+1)
San Francisco – April 19, 2023 (20:12 GMT-7)
Sydney – April 20, 2023 (13:12 GMT+10)
A new eclipse cycle begins this week focusing on the star signs Aries and Libra. The new cycle begins with a Solar Eclipse at 29° Aries on April 20th (or April 19th depending where you live in the world) and this eclipse is already turning out to be special.
Firstly, a Solar Eclipse is a New Moon and this is the second of two New Moons in Aries, the first star sign. On March 21st, one day after the Equinox, there was a New Moon at 0° Aries at the beginning of the star sign and of the zodiac.
This month’s New Moon, also a Solar Eclipse, is at the end of the star sign Aries. Therefore, the focus on Aries remains strong. This Solar Eclipse will be primarily visible in Australia and South East Asia.
Hybrid Solar Eclipse
Secondly, this is a hybrid solar eclipse. This means, the type of eclipse changes depending where you view it from. A Solar Eclipse can be total, partial or annular.
A total eclipse is where the Moon covers the Sun and an annular eclipse is where the circle of the Moon is too small to cover the Sun completely. A partial eclipse looks like a bite has been taken out of the Sun as the Moon covers it at an angle.
A hybrid eclipse only happens approximately once a decade – the last was in 2013 and the next will be in 2031. What this may mean symbolically isn’t obvious. It could suggest, for example, that a situation or event can be altered depending on your perspective and how you choose to view things.
Eclipse Lore
To understand eclipses, the language and symbolism of the eclipse can act as a guide. When the lights, the Sun and Moon, are eclipsed, you are effectively ‘in the dark’ and things become hidden or shadowy. Secrets can emerge as what’s unknown comes to light and a new landscape is revealed.
A New Moon is a symbol of new beginnings. A New Moon Solar Eclipse often acts like a turbo-powered New Moon igniting you into action as you move into a new stage or phase in life.
Yet, at any eclipse, often one door has to close before a new door can be opened. Plus, this Solar Eclipse has a double theme of endings as it falls right at the end of one star sign before tipping into another. The Sun moves into Taurus, the star sign after Aries, only four hours after the eclipse.
Traditionally, you’re wise to wait a few days after an eclipse before taking action. Yet, during this Solar Eclipse, it may be that you’re wise to wait even longer.
This is because communication planet Mercury turns retrograde on April 21st and remains on go slow until May 15th. It could take a few weeks for events to play out. Or, perhaps for you to make sense of things. It may be that you need to become comfortable with not knowing or being uncertain, for a while at least. Trust in the timing of the astrology.
Planetary Aspects
Eclipses can swing both ways – they can coincide with miracles and synchronicities, also crisis and the unexpected. There’s real potential, however, for this eclipse to bring something new and remarkable into your life.
This is because the planet of opportunity Jupiter is at 23° Aries and sits next to the Sun and Moon at 29° Aries. It’s a wide orb but it still relevant.
Jupiter’s theme is risk, expansion and growth and saying yes to life. It does, however, give a lot of power and emphasis to this particular Solar Eclipse. Perhaps, you feel out of control or find that events run away with you.
The other significant planetary aspect to note is Pluto square to the Sun and Moon. This isn’t obvious at first, as it’s a dissociate planetary aspect, i.e. Pluto is in Aquarius, a fixed star sign while the Sun and Moon are in Aries, a cardinal star sign. It’s not a classic square aspect.
Yet, once the Sun enters Taurus, a few hours after the eclipse, the Sun-Pluto square perfects at 0°.
What might this mean? Perhaps, that by moving through a door or portal fired up by the Solar Eclipse energy, this requires something else in your life to come to an end? It might be two separate areas of life? You can say yes to one direction or path which ultimately means saying goodbye to another.
Aries-Libra Axis
Relationships may be emphasised with this new set of eclipses focusing on Aries ruling the self and Libra ruling relationships. The challenge may be how to keep your own identity when you’re in relationship, either personally or professionally.
Yet, the deeper learning about yourself comes from seeing and understanding yourself in relation to another. When you dive deep into love or another key partnership in your life, this often holds up a mirror revealing who you really are. Compromise is a necessary aspect of any partnership as is remaining true to who you are – often a fine line to walk.
Solar Eclipses – Power Points
Here are the dates and degrees of this new Aries/Libra eclipse cycle:
- Solar Eclipse [29 Aries 50] – April 20 2023
- Solar Eclipse [21 Libra 08] – October 14 2023
- Lunar Eclipse [5 Libra 07] – March 25 2024
- Solar Eclipse [19 Aries 24] – April 8 2024
- Solar Eclipse [10 Libra 04] – October 2 2024
- Solar Eclipse [9 Aries 00] – March 29 2025
What’s immediately noticeable here is that nearly all the eclipses in this new cycle are Solar or New Moon eclipses. Therefore, the theme of independence or finding yourself may ring true over the next couple of years. Following your own path, whether in a relationship or not, could become a major theme. Also, fighting for your rights or the underdog.
Also, notice who comes into your life on or around the eclipses. Life isn’t meant to be lived entirely alone and it’s the people you meet and the connections you build that often determine the course of your life. Love and loss are often experienced more powerfully when we’re in relationship with others.
If you have planets or angles that are within close orb to the eclipse degree (29° Aries), then more likely than not change is on the way. Or, at least an opportunity to reorient your compass as you move forward.
What Does It Mean For You
If you know your horoscope, it’s helpful to consider where the new set of eclipses will fall to better understand where change may occur and which areas of your life are under the cosmic spotlight. Here’s a reminder. Read both your Sun sign and your Ascendant sign if you know it:
- Aries: Self-oriented goals, image and profile, body – relationships, partnership, contracts
- Taurus: Retreat and inner work, caring for others – work, service, lifestyle and health
- Gemini: Friends, groups and social networks – self-expression, creativity, children and love affairs
- Cancer: Career and vocation, your future path – home and family, your past and legacy
- Leo: Travel, education, beliefs – communication, community, neighbours and siblings
- Virgo: Other peoples’ money and taboo issues – possessions, assets, values and self-worth
- Libra: Relationships, partnership, contracts – self-oriented goals, image and profile, body
- Scorpio: Work, service, lifestyle and health – retreat and inner work, caring for others
- Sagittarius: Self-expression, creativity, children and love affairs – friends, groups and social networks

Thank you Sally. Been feeling touchy since yesterday. Are these effects positive or negative?
They can swing either way – I think this eclipse is particularly intense though as it’s a pivotal degree and square to Pluto. Tread carefully is the best advice and rest up beforehand if you can.
Definitely feeling like retreating inward.
Thanks from Australia x
Love your work
Thank you 🙂
