May Day celebrations go back hundreds of years. The half-way point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, it’s a verdant, colourful celebration, perfect for Taurus season, the abundant, fertile earth sign. The Sun remains in Taurus until May 20.
Fire Sign Energy
There’s a forward-moving thrust of planetary energy moving into May and there are a couple of reasons why.
Firstly, at the start of the month, three of the faster-moving planets are in fire signs, motivated and dynamic. Talk planet Mercury is in Aries, the planet of love and money Venus is in Aries and action planet Mars is in Leo.
Plus, all three planets are returning to the place they were in the zodiac when they turned retrograde. In astrology, this is defined as the end of the shadow phase. The major retrograde chapter which has dominated the skies from October 2024 onwards is nearing completion.
This gives a theme of second chances and trying again where things got halted or stalled previously.
Mercury moved out of its shadow on April 26, Mars moves out of its shadow on May 2 and Venus moves out of its shadow on May 15.
This is significant as you’re no longer held back. Consider where you’re fired up, motivated and ready for action.
Pluto Turns Retrograde – May 4
The slowest moving planet Pluto turns retrograde on May 4. Pluto is the only retrograde planet for the next two months. This can be a good thing as it means Pluto’s power is weakened.
This could symbolise the end of a conflict situation that’s been ongoing in your life for the last six months. Pluto will remain retrograde until October 14.
Pluto’s change in direction to retrograde motion turns your attention inwards and backwards. Pluto’s nature is intensified when it stations, i.e. switches direction.
If you have planets or angles close to 3° Aquarius or the other fixed star signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, you may be feeling this strongly.
Pluto is God of the underworld and rules loss and destruction. Yet, Pluto’s power can be put to good use to regenerate, empower and transform people and the world.
Be purposeful in your life, wherever Pluto falls in your horoscope, and choose to use Pluto’s power to good effect.
Saturn enters Aries – May 25
The planet of authority and responsibility Saturn changes star sign approximately every two years. Saturn entered the last star sign Pisces in March 2023 and this month Saturn moves into the first star sign Aries on May 25.
The last time Saturn was in Aries was April 1996 to February 1999. This time around, Saturn remains in Aries until April 2028, apart from September 1, 2025 to February 14, 2026 when it will be back in Pisces.
Saturn in Aries is an uncomfortable combination as Aries is a fire sign that likes to be impulsive, radical and independent. Whereas, Saturn represents rules and laws, it’s a slow and steady influence and favours patience over spontaneous impulses.
You might want to rise up against the system when Saturn’s in Aries. Yet, doing your own thing (Aries) could get you into trouble with the authorities (Saturn).
At its best, this combination is strident, a blazing fury and headstrong. Be wary of starting something new, however, and running out of steam.
What’s important is that Saturn and Neptune are side by side in Aries throughout June, July & August 2025. Therefore, wherever these two planets fall in your horoscope, this is a time to experiment and sow seeds ready for their major conjunction in February 2026.
Moon’s Phases
Full Moon Scorpio – May 12
During the Full Moon on May 12, the light of the moon is at its peak, shining a light on your current situation. Traditionally, a Full Moon is the time to trust your intuition, make important decisions and bring matters to completion or culmination.
This Full Moon is lively because the planet of innovation and awakening Uranus sits next to the Sun. The Sun/Uranus conjunction in Taurus falls on May 17.
Uranus words are change, revolution, rebellion, awakening, enlightenment, surprise, invention, innovation. Earth sign Taurus is linked to nature and growth and water sign Scorpio represents decay and regeneration. Tap into your own powers of healing and transformation during the Scorpio Full Moon.
New Moon Gemini – May 27
A New Moon is a symbol of new beginnings. Traditionally, a New Moon is the time to launch a project, begin something new and start over.
This is the beginning of the waxing phase of the Moon cycle, an ideal time to set your intentions for the month ahead. Make a wish when you first catch sight of the crescent Moon, a couple of days after the New Moon date.
The New Moon on May 27 falls in air sign Gemini, the sign of communication, both the written and spoken word. Write down your intentions or voice them out loud.
The Sun & Moon are accompanied by talk planet Mercury in Gemini, one of its favourite star signs. The Sun/Mercury conjunction falls on May 30.
This would be an excellent New Moon phase to line up a meeting or interview, launch a podcast or website or have an important conversation. It’s a social end to the month.
