There’s always a New Moon in Sagittarius at this time of year and rightly so. Sagittarius is the explorer of the zodiac, keen to fire its arrows high into the sky and line up some new adventures and exciting goals for the year ahead.
At its best, Sagittarius is the optimist who believes in possibility and holds on tightly to hope and faith. It’s the star sign that considers the bigger picture and adopts a philosophical approach to life. You’d do well to adopt some Sagittarius characteristics as one year comes to a close and another year is close on the horizon.
Use this week’s New Moon in Sagittarius on December 20 to set your intentions for 2026. Dare to fire some arrows into the sky to see where they may land. This is the last New Moon of the year and an ideal time to look ahead.
New beginnings are a key theme of a New Moon, a chance to start over and turn to a fresh page. Perhaps, you’re setting off on holiday or travelling for the festivities. However, it’s not just a time of beginnings for a couple of reasons.
Saturn & Neptune’s Lessons
This month’s New Moon is making two major planetary aspects with Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. The Sun is square Saturn at 25° Pisces on December 17 and the Sun is square Neptune at 29° Pisces on December 21, both planetary aspects falling either side of the New Moon phase.
What’s important here is that Saturn and Neptune, are completing their journeys through Pisces, the last star sign. Next year, in January & February 2026, they will move on. Saturn’s been in Pisces since March 2023 and Neptune for much longer since 2011/2012.
Therefore, there’s a theme of completion taking place and it’s important to ask what this means for you. Perhaps, it’s an obvious ending or a sense of dissolution or things falling away.
Saturn is the planet of limitation and obstacles, also fear and doubt. However, it’s the get real planet, the planet of responsibility and can be helpful when you need to make a decision, however tough.
Neptune’s influence is boundless, sensitive and emotional, especially in Pisces, its star sign of rulership. You could, however, feel disillusioned or lost and confused when Neptune’s influence kicks in.
What both planets in Pisces are encouraging you to do is surrender and let go of the things that aren’t working out. Perhaps, this is a time when you find comfort in prayer or meditation.
It’s not a time to rush. Instead, slow down and turn inwards. Reconnect with life beyond the tangible and beyond the ego and dare to push back the boundaries of life to see what’s possible.
At their best when working together, Saturn and Neptune are encouraging you to breathe life into your hopes and wishes and make a plan and take small steps towards turning your vision and dreams into reality.

Also, feel your emotions and don’t repress them. The holiday period and festive season can be a challenging time for many people. There’s often an experience of loss or grief if the ones you love are no longer with you or you’re on your own. Be sensitive to other people and, most importantly, be kind and caring to yourself.
The Solstice occurs the day after this New Moon on December 21 when the Sun enters Capricorn. It falls after the square aspects to the Sun, a symbol of light, and is, therefore, a symbol of hope. Light candles at the weekend, honour those who have passed and bring light into the dark.
