The major planetary aspect taking place this week on July 20 links two of the most powerful planetary archetypes – the planet of opportunity and expansion Jupiter opposite the planet of transformation and loss Pluto.

In mythology, Jupiter (Zeus) was God of the Sky and Pluto (Hades) was God of the Underworld. They were brothers, although Jupiter was King of the Gods. The characteristics of Jupiter and Pluto are poles apart but together they can wield huge power. 

If you have these two planets in major aspect in your birth chart, there are often themes in your life around wealth and loss, status and power. Hidden riches and intense experiences can be part of your life story, as the pendulum of fate swings from one to the other. 

Jupiter’s the planet of good fortune, while Pluto can represent corruption and underhand means. Jupiter’s the truth seeker and Pluto exposes what’s hidden, as the planet of self-transformation and a psychoanalytical force.

Previous Dates

The Jupiter-Pluto opposition takes place approximately every 13 years. The last time they opposed one another across the zodiac was from August 2013 to April 2014 when Jupiter was in Cancer and Pluto was in Capricorn.

Previously, they made a major opposition across the Gemini/Sagittarius axis of the zodiac in September/October 2000 and again in May 2001.

This time around, they don’t just meet once across the Leo/Aquarius axis as they’re going to meet here again from September 2038 to June 2039. I’m not sure how unusual this is as Pluto does spend longer in some star signs than others.

What is significant about the current opposition is that Leo & Aquarius is the zodiac axis of the current eclipse cycle which takes place from February 2026 to January 2028. Eclipses often coincide with change and accelerate growth.

The Jupiter-Pluto opposition suggests that things cannot remain the same. Something needs to give. Perhaps, something needs to breakdown before you/we/all of us can break through.

The Big Pattern

This opposition is part of the Big Pattern which is one of the most-talked about planetary patterns this year.

Between July 15 & July 25, the three modern planets, Uranus in Gemini, Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius are in a tight Minor Trine aspect pattern, all at 4° of their respective star signs.

Therefore, even though the Jupiter-Pluto opposition on July 20 is mighty and powerful, it’s not acting alone. When Jupiter moves to 4° Leo, it creates a cradle pattern with the three modern planets. This suggests connectedness, support, a holding pattern.

Jupiter in Leo is trine Neptune in Aries, also on July 20 and Jupiter in Leo is sextile Uranus in Gemini, on July 21. Plus, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are interconnected and working together. You could say they’re holding hands in the universe.

Two of the planets are in air signs, Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius. And, on July 19, the Moon at 4° Libra creates a Grand Air Trine in the pattern with Uranus in Gemini & Pluto in Aquarius.

Two of the planets in the pattern are in fire signs, Jupiter in Leo and Neptune in Aries. The fire and air signs are extrovert energy, encouraging you to engage actively with the world and other people. There’s dynamism, motivation, ideas and progress in the mix.

Personal Power

In your own life, you could expand your knowledge or learning on a deep level now, perhaps at record speed. New records could be set around super-human feats of intelligence. Use the internet to boost your potential but don’t forget the human touch. Teacher or student, stay connected to life and your fellow human beings.

Where are you willing to take a step up, be empowered, be an agent of social change? The Jupiter/Pluto opposition is a symbol of power and influence. It will be particularly powerful if you have planets/angles between 3-5° of the air signs, Gemini, Libra & Aquarius and fire signs, Aries, Leo & Sagittarius. Also, if you have the two planets in aspect in your own birth chart.

This is not about acting selfishly but doing things for the greater good and having solid ethics or a strong moral purpose. Leo can be a greedy star sign and its flip side is selfishness, entitlement and grandeur. Jupiter in Leo can be a symbol of a leader who is arrogant and playing God.

Whereas the air signs, Gemini & Aquarius, know the power of collaboration and equality within society. And, Aries knows that individual action makes a difference in the world.

Where are you being called to expand your reach into the world and beyond to connect with other people? Leo, at its best, is a positive leadership influence and one of the most creative star signs.
