New Moon [0 Virgo 23]

The New Moon takes place this week on August 23 in Virgo, the star sign of order and ritual. Traditionally, a New Moon is an ideal time to set your intentions. Then, you make a wish when you first see the crescent Moon in the night sky, a couple of days later.
At the exact moment of the New Moon, the Sun and Moon sit side-by-side in the zodiac and, this time around, they are in earth sign Virgo. Virgo is the star sign of order and analysis, list-making and strategy, resourcefulness and measured behaviour. It’s linked to work and routine, lifestyle and health, self-care and service to others.
Therefore, this is an excellent New Moon to start a new habit or begin an activity which feeds you, nurtures you, grounds you and strengthens you. The call of this New Moon in Virgo is to live your life well, restore order, calm the mind and not let fear or worry take hold.
A New Moon in a feminine earth sign is the ideal time to put one foot in front of the other, to allow the constancy and beauty of nature to soothe your soul, to be grateful for the rituals and routine of your daily life. Much nurturing and care may be needed now.
Start with you, the ones you love, heal self and others, help and be of service and gently move out into the world.
Eclipse Season
This is the first of two New Moons in Virgo back-to-back. This one falls at the start of the star sign 0° Virgo and the next one falls at the end of the star sign 29° Virgo. However, next month’s New Moon on September 21 is a Solar Eclipse and we are currently deep into the Virgo/Pisces eclipse season. This began in September 2024 and will continue until February 2027.
This is where the karmic nodes are, the North Node in Pisces and the South Node in Virgo. So it’s unusual that this New Moon isn’t part of the eclipse season – or is it?
Eclipses often coincide with accelerated growth and change. Therefore, wherever the star signs Virgo & Pisces fall in your horoscope, this is where things are speeding up and fast. Plus, there’s another reason why this current New Moon is extra lively.
The Uranus Factor
That reason is the planet Uranus, the change merchant, which is exactly square the Sun and Moon during the New Moon phase. The Moon in Virgo clashes with Uranus one hour after the New Moon date/time and the Sun in Virgo clashes with Uranus one day after the New Moon date/time.
Therefore, there could be some controversy during this New Moon. Or perhaps, the unexpected kicks in and you have to change plans and fast. This will be especially true for you if you have planets or angles between 1-2° of the mutable star signs, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius & Pisces.
Uranus is the planet linked to rebellion, its nature is innovative, sudden, unpredictable and erratic. The flip side of Uranus is spontaneity, impulse, the flick of a switch, lightning moves, freedom, cutting ties.
Uranus moved into air sign Gemini early July 2025 and is trying out its new star sign. Next April 2026, Uranus will fully immerse itself in Gemini for the subsequent seven years.
Uranus rules electricity, technology and the airwaves. It’s the shock factor and the higher octave of Mercury as both planets are linked to communication, in some shape or form. Uranus likes to be in Gemini, Mercury’s star sign, and even the glyphs look similar – Uranus (♅) is like a TV aerial and Gemini ♊ is a symbol of duality.
This combination flags up our ability to communicate further than we ever thought – outer space, inner mind, between mortals and Gods.
Notice what’s calling you or pulling you during this week’s New Moon. Use Uranus’ energy well and you can make a snap decision, come up with a genius idea, share your brilliance, make a break for freedom.
Yet, it’s not easy planetary energy, as it’s fast and unpredictable. The best advice is to stay flexible and be ready to move quickly. At the same time, check out your impulsive or rebellious motivations and don’t lose the power of logic and the mind to keep you on track.
Back To Basics
It’s a fairly chaotic New Moon period. Even more reason to pay attention to the Virgo details and come back to basics. Virgo’s the perfectionist who sometimes needs to repeat the mantra ‘good enough is good enough’.
Virgo is a star sign that can get a bad press for playing small. Yet, the best way to create change in your life is to take one small step at a time towards your chosen goal. Making big demands on yourself may not pay off but create new daily practices and you can slowly and effectively change the habits of a lifetime.
Wait until the silver slither of the crescent moon emerges in the night sky a couple of nights after the New Moon date. Then, make your New Moon wish and tend to your garden of life.
