The New Moon in Virgo takes place today, a symbol of new beginnings and an ideal time of the month to set your intentions for the month ahead.

This New Moon is all about the earth sign Virgo, so get your pencils at the ready, write up your list of things to do and aim to get organised. Virgo is the sign that rules work and routine, lifestyle and health and now is the time to start new habits and crack on. It’s an ideal opportunity to clean up your act and sort out your life.

This is an intriguing New Moon because, if you look at the chart below, not only are the Sun and Moon in Virgo, but all five fast-moving planetary bodies are in the sign of Virgo, the Virgin, the keeper of the harvest. The Sun and Moon are joined by Mercury (communication), Venus (relating) and Mars (action). This isn’t necessarily a rare planetary event but it is quite unusual.

It’s an overload of Virgo activity, which rules the 6th house of the horoscope, and is getting you ready to move out into the world. The first six houses of the zodiac are about you, the self; the second six houses are about relationships and your place in the world.

Virgo/6th house activity is the preparation for moving on and considering how you can serve others. This is one of Virgo’s skills, being of service and right now, the world needs helpers.

Opposites

If you look at the New Moon chart below, you can see three major oppositions, and oppositions indicate tension. Chiron, the wounded healer, sits opposite the Sun, highlighting the Virgo/Pisces axis of healing and surrender.

Mercury in Virgo is opposed by Neptune in Pisces, a classic symbol of fake news. Neptune distorts the facts, the mind, Mercury’s realm and can divert you away from what’s true and real.

The third and final Jupiter-Uranus opposition is also reaching completion, exact on September 28th. These two Sky Gods shake things up, they urge you to break free and take risks but without a safety net. It can be exciting energy if you’re in a place to fly high but it’s crazy and wild. They first opposed one another at the end of 2016.

In brief, there’s a lot going on right now, a good reason to focus on the basics, the essentials and use the Virgo energy to move forward one step at a time.

Autumn/Spring Equinox – September 22

Some key planets are getting ready to change signs and this too is important. Firstly, the Sun moves into Libra later this week on September 22nd, the day of the Equinox, when night and day are in equal balance. The Equinox is one of four key markers in the zodiac year and it symbolises the beginning of a new chapter, a new season.

Three of the slower-moving planets are also preparing to move signs, another hint that going backwards or doing the same thing isn’t an option now. Change is coming and change is needed.

Jupiter, the planet of opportunity and expansion, leaves Libra on October 10th, where it’s been for the past year. After embracing the world of society, connections, artistic endeavours and 1-to-1 relationships, Jupiter is diving deep into water sign Scorpio ready to explore the psyche, all things hidden and taboo areas.

Saturn too is making an epic move later this year on December 20th. Saturn, the taskmaster of the heavens, has been in Sagittarius, the sign of religion, education and travel since late 2014. At the end of 2017, Saturn moves into its sign of rulership Capricorn, where it’s strong. Saturn in Capricorn rules with an iron fist, purposeful but calculating.

The final planet to be completing its journey through a sign is Uranus, the planet of spontaneity and change. Uranus has been in Aries for the past 6 years but next year, 2018, it leaves behind the sign of the individual, Aries, where it’s been causing a revolution and enters Taurus, the sign of money. So here too, there’s a symbol of change, a new wave sweeping in.

New Wave

You may have read in the media a new wave of ‘end of the world’ predictions, highlighting, in particular, the date September 23rd. Depending on where you live in the world, you might already think that the world is coming to an end. With major hurricanes and earthquakes taking place, no-one can deny that nature isn’t already wreaking havoc on the earth.

The current astrology doesn’t suggest doomsday, but it is highlighting the earth with a plethora of planets now in earth signs. Five planetary bodies in Virgo and both Saturn and Uranus on the verge of entering the other two earth signs, Capricorn and Taurus, respectively. Earth signs represent security, they are about money, what we produce, the essentials of life, going back to basics, rebuilding.

This week, there’s been an incredible display in the night sky just before dawn. The Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars have been visible in the sky. All of the personal planets in Virgo, a visible sign that we need to tend to the earth more than ever and to be there for one another. Onwards…
