Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion activists are back out on the streets of London and other major cities around the world this week. From an astrological perspective, this is about Uranus’ move into Taurus. Uranus is the planet of rebellion and Taurus is one of the earth signs, closely linked to nature.
Extinction Rebellion describes itself as “an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse”. Their protests are to demand urgent action to tackle climate change.
Uranus In Taurus
The synchronicity with Uranus’ move through Taurus is quite extraordinary. The organisation was established in May 2018 when 100 academics signed a call to action to support the non-political movement. May 2018 was the month Uranus moved in to Taurus for the first time in almost eighty years.
Extinction Rebellion was launched at the end of October 2018 by Roger Hallam (b. May 4, 1966) and Gail Bradbrook (b. April 30, 1972) and other activists from the campaign group Rising Up. Note the dates of birth of the founders, they were both born with the Sun in Taurus.
Venus’ Role, Ruler of Taurus
The official date and time of the first protest in London was October 31, 2018 at 10:00am (see chart below), when activists gathered outside the Houses of Parliament. Notice the Venus-Uranus opposition in the horoscope, Venus at 0 degrees Scorpio opposing Uranus at 0 degrees Taurus. This is important for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, when Uranus was in Aries ruled by Mars from 2010-2018, this was marked by violent unrest, e.g. the Arab Spring started in December 2010. Now, Uranus is in Taurus ruled by Venus and Venus is primarily peace-loving, even if she can in turn be a warrior. Non-violent demonstration is Extinction Rebellion’s way.
Taurus/Scorpio Axis
Secondly, the Taurus-Scorpio axis is closely linked with the cycles of nature. Taurus rules produce, food, what the earth creates for us, how the earth nurtures and nourishes us.
Whereas, Scorpio rules destruction, also regeneration, composting, transformation and rebirth. At a base level, the Taurus/Scorpio axis is about our very survival and the survival of our planet.
More Astrology
The next wave of protests in April 2019 saw almost 1,000 people arrested over 11 days. During these protests, the Sun in Taurus was conjunct Uranus in Taurus on April 22nd in the midst of the demonstrations.
Fast forward to the current fortnight of protests and Uranus is active once again. Plus, today, October 8, 2019, Venus re-enters Scorpio. Venus and Uranus once again oppose each other across the Scorpio/Taurus axis of the zodiac on October 12, 2019. Perfect timing.
London Fashion Week
Venus’ influence can also be seen in the protests in September 2019 when three days of actions took place at London Fashion week – Venus is linked to the fashion world as it rules beauty. The protests were in order to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the fashion industry and fast fashion.
Uranus In Taurus – 2025
The actions of Extinction Rebellion and other groups around the world will only increase as Uranus continues its journey through Taurus until 2025, coincidentally the year that’s included in one of Extinction Rebellion’s key demands, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025.
Don’t be surprised to find Venus’, Taurus’ ruler and friend of the environment and nature also playing a significant role and standing hand-in-hand with Uranus.
As an aside, my niece has taken time off work to protest in London – her star sign? Sun Taurus. And yes, she’s having a Uranus transit of her Sun!
