Chinese New Year: Year of the Dragon

2024, Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is always celebrated on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice (December 21st). This is why the date changes every year – it’s a Lunar festival.

Chinese New Year celebrations continue for a couple of weeks. 2024’s Chinese New Year celebrations will begin at the New Moon in Aquarius on February 9th, with major celebrations taking place the following day on February 10th.

There are many traditions associated with the Chinese New Year, the most famous being the gift of money in a red envelope, red being the colour of good luck. The gifts are passed to children or young people who aren’t married, along with blessings of good fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity.

Another popular gift are tangerines and oranges, as their Chinese names sound like ‘gold” and ‘wealth’ respectively. The celebrations are colourful and vibrant, full of life and noise.

There are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon and one of the most auspicious years to be born. Therefore, this is said to be a year of transformation when you’re wise to seize new opportunities and rise to change and challenges. Align your personal goals with your purpose and higher calling. Breathe fire into new projects.

Your Chinese New Year

As there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, you celebrate the animal year you were born every 12 years. This is the equivalent of your Jupiter Return in western astrology, which takes place every 12 years.

Therefore, when you turn 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and so on, you have both your Jupiter Return and your Chinese Animal year. The Jupiter Return year is a time of success and achievement, encouraging you to say yes to life and embrace new opportunities.

Here are the dates of the Chinese New Years – remember that they only begin on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice and this is different every year. Therefore, you would need to check if you’re born late January/first half of February to find out what Chinese animal you are.
