October could turn out to be the pivotal month of the year. There’s so much big astrology taking place, some of it echoing what’s coming in 2023. Here’s what’s most significant for you to take note of:
Mercury Turns Direct
There are four planets switching direction this month and the first one is Mercury, the planet of communication. Mercury’s been retrograde since September 10th and it’s been an unusually chaotic Mercury retrograde phase.
Mercury turns direct on the 2nd in your fellow earth sign Virgo. Virgo rules travel and study in your horoscope, the bigger picture. It’s where you find meaning and purpose.
Sometimes, news or information comes to light once Mercury is back up to speed. Or, anything that’s been delayed finally gets moving.
The 7th/8th are powerful dates when Mercury in Virgo teams up with power planet Pluto in your star sign Capricorn. This happens on the 7th and the following day, the 8th, Pluto turns direct in Capricorn. When a major planet like Pluto switches direction, this often brings matters to a head and things feel intense.
You may be determined to book a holiday or course. Or, perhaps you have a crisis of faith and you’re ready to sign up to a new religion or tread your spiritual path.
There’s laser focus when Pluto switches direction. It can mean that you step into your power and say yes to your birthright. Alternatively, it may be through loss or a chapter coming to an end that you realise life is short and you’re ready to stake your claim.
It’s important to know that Pluto is starting its journey out of Capricorn where it’s been since 2008. In March 2023, Pluto will leave Capricorn for the first time. If you’ve been pulled into the underworld during Pluto’s reign, hopefully you’ve emerged stronger for the experience.
Full Moon Aries
On the 11th, Mercury’s on the move again and returns to Libra where it turned retrograde on September 10th. This is significant for you as Libra is your career and vocation sector. Libra’s the star sign at the peak of your horoscope and there’s a flurry of activity here until the end of the month.
The Full Moon may be the turning point, the culmination of events, a completion. It takes place on the 9th. This Full Moon cuts across the Aries/Libra axis of the zodiac and the foundations of your horoscope.
You may feel pulled in different directions during the Full Moon phase. Alternatively, you may recognise where you need to say yes to a new role, position or job to support your family.
Big planet Jupiter is in Aries and your home and family sector during the Full Moon. This can indicate living somewhere different or expanding your family in some way. Whatever issue is foreground for you, make an intuitive decision on your next steps during the Full Moon phase.
Also, it’s a good idea to get on the right side of people of influence. Throughout October, the planet of relating Venus sits next to the Sun in Libra. They perfect their conjunction on the 22nd before they change star signs and they’re powerful during the mid-month phase.
The air signs – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius – dominate from the 12th to the 23rd. This is a recognition that you can get more done and go further in your life when you make the right networks & connections. Use Libra season to schmooze and charm other people and know that people power counts for a lot.
The key dates for you are the 12th, 14th & 23rd when the inner planets in Libra align with your ruling planet Saturn in Aquarius. You may be called upon to be an authority or to step into a leadership role. Alternatively, you may be the one supporting other people to step up, whether you’re doing so financially or emotionally.
The 23rd could be significant as this is the date when your planet Saturn turns direct in Aquarius and your personal money sector. Sometimes, this means finances get the go-ahead. Other times, it means you have to work harder to make your way financially.
Either way, Saturn is preparing to complete its journey through Aquarius and will leave your money sector in March 2023. Saturn’s been in Aquarius since 2020 so think of the next few months as a time to wrap things up, complete a deadline or finalise a money-making project.
Solar Eclipse Scorpio
On the 23rd, the Sun & Venus change star sign side-by-side as they enter the deep water sign Scorpio. Scorpio rules your friendships & group activities. This indicates that love and friendship are linked. Also, that friendships matter a great deal.
Two days later and there’s a powerful Solar Eclipse in Scorpio on the 25th. This is part of the eclipse cycle that began in November 2021 and completes in October 2023. A Solar Eclipse is a New Moon with oomph. Yet, sometimes there has to be an ending before a new beginning emerges.
This could be a time when you join a group or leave a group. Or, perhaps a key friendship takes a definitive turn. A few days later, expansive Jupiter returns to water sign Pisces where it remains for a short while until December 20th.
Pisces is your communication sector and linked to your community, your siblings & neighbours. People power is dominant so find your tribe and creative meaningful alliances in your life. This isn’t about small talk, it’s about connecting on an emotional level.
You could meet someone influential in the latter part of October. Alternatively, you might be the one playing a key role in other people’s lives.
Mars Retrograde
Finally this month, action planet Mars turns retrograde on the 30th. Mars is currently in Gemini and your work and health sector. It’s about your routine and lifestyle. When Mars switches direction, it can be the time to take your foot off the accelerator and slow things down. You might have less energy while Mars is in retreat.
What Mars retrograde is good for is reviewing your current situation, either regarding your work or your health. Take some time out to think things through and don’t rush into anything new. Mars remains on go slow until January 12, 2023.
The fact that Mars leaves Gemini the same month that Saturn leaves Aquarius – March 2023 – could mean that these planetary factors are linked. This may be when a contract or job comes to an end which impacts you financially. Or, perhaps you’re involved in learning something new that could benefit you financially next year.
Eclipse Do’s & Don’ts
Eclipse season kicks in this month & next as the Taurus/Scorpio eclipse cycle continues. Here are some eclipse tips:
- Try not to fear an eclipse – they are a reminder that you’re not always in control.
- Ideally, don’t choose an eclipse date to launch a project or start something new.
- Wait a few days after an eclipse before taking action. Eclipse symbolism is shadowy and hidden.
- Once the eclipse shadow lifts, then you can try to take advantage of any changes that have occurred.
- Know that the eclipses are closely linked to the karmic nodes & wheel of destiny – sometimes, they offer a turning point ready or not.

“Or, perhaps you’re involved in learning something new that could benefit you financially next year.” This really speaks to me. I start a more advanced class in January 2023 and will be graduating from nursing school in May 2023. This is the beginning of a great journey for me. I enjoy nursing and helping others. Making more money will be an extra benefit. Thank you, Sally!
