Astrology tattoos are tattoos that incorporate astrological signs and symbols into their designs.

As people use astrology more and more to learn about their personality traits, as well as the roles that the stars and planets play in our lives, using astrology symbols for tattoos has also become increasingly popular.

The most popular type of astrology tattoo is one that includes your zodiac sign, which is based on the position of the sun when you were born.

But, as any astrology connoisseur would know – this isn’t the only option!

Some people also have their moon sign tattooed onto their bodies, which is based on the moon’s position when you were born. This is said to indicate a person’s emotional side (as opposed to their outward personality).

Others prefer to include their rising sign or ascendant sign instead of both sun and moon signs because it indicates what kind of first impression they make on others.

What Are “The Big 3” In Astrology?

There are a lot of moving parts to astrology — planets, houses, aspects, etc. — but a persons’ sun sign (the position of the sun on their date of birth) and their moon sign (the position of the moon on that date) are two factors most people are (usually) most familiar with.

People’s personalities often have an inner and outer layer — their “public face” and their “private face”. Sun signs describe what people show to the world; moon signs describe how they feel on the inside.

With that said, there is also something called your rising sign or ascendant. This is more about how you show up in the world, habits and mannerisms than your personality, but many people like to include it when getting astrology tattoos.

Sun sign is by far the most popular when it comes to tattoos, and it is a very important part of one’s natal chart. Moon sign, on the other hand, is not that commonly tattooed on its own.

Rising sign (also called ascendant) is another aspect of one’s natal chart that was earlier often left out of tattoos, but since 2020 started getting more attention.

How To Create Astrology Tattoos To Include “The Big 3”

All the above being said, getting an astrology tattoo that includes your three most important astrology placements is still a great way to showcase your entire presence in the world.

The design can include any aspect of a person’s chart, though the most common design in the ‘20s came to include “The Big 3.”

This can include all three as separate items or one design with all three incorporated into a single piece.

How to go about it?

  • Find out your Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant. There are a lot of free sites where you can do that, such as: Astrotheme or Cafe Astrology.
  • Read through  and understand the symbolism behind each of these. Take time to really do an extensive read about these three placements, what they represent, how they resonate with you, and most importantly what you think describes you best. If you’re not sure how to read these signs, an astrologer can help you with an astrology reading where you’d also be able to ask all the questions you have.
  • Now that we have your sign, Moon sign and Rising sign, it is time to think about the style you’d like your tattoo to have.

Now, artists mostly draw designs with the intention of showing off a part of your personality depending on which style you choose!

They need to represent important aspects of your personality and can be as simple as a line design of your elements or more complex. They can even be more complicated tattoos showing multiple planets and stars in their correct positions at one’s date of birth based on location of birth.

  • Now it’s finally the time to design your tattoo! If you’re confident in your drawing skills you can give it a go (let’s go – you can do it!) or you can go to Astro Tattoos and get paired with your personal artist. The artist is chosen based on the style, of course. It’s sufficient to just let them know a brief of your signs, and some references of the styles you like.

Not Sure About The Style Yet?

Choosing the right tattoo can be tricky. There are so many different elements that make up a good design, including the style of tattoo you pick.
